Today's Earthquake: M 5.5 Shakes of the Banda Sea from Terasa to Timor-Leste
Tectonic earthquake with magnitude (M) of 5.5 shook the Banda Sea region, this morning Thursday (2/4/2020) at 09.13 WIB.
Based on the analysis of the Climatology Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) this earthquake epicenter is located at coordinates 8.0 LS and 125.69 East.
The exact location is at sea at a distance of 76 kilometers west of Tiakur City, Southwest Maluku Regency, Maluku at a depth of 15 kilometers.
The Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Rahmat Triyono MSc, said that by looking at the epicenter location and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was a type of shallow earthquake due to local fault activity.
"The analysis of the source mechanism shows that the earthquake has a horizontal movement mechanism or strike slip," Rahmat said in his written statement.
Although the earthquake that occurred was located at sea, the BMKG modeling results showed no tsunami potential.
However, the impact of the earthquake shocks that occurred was felt in Timor Leste with a MMI III scale and Alor with an MMI II-III intensity scale. The vibration was felt real inside the house and the vibration was as if a truck had passed.
"Until now there has been no report of the impact of the damage caused by the earthquake," he said.
Meanwhile, related to aftershocks until Thursday (2/3/2020) at 09.50 WIB, BMKG monitoring results have not shown any aftershock activity.
Nevertheless, the community was asked to avoid buildings that were cracked or damaged by the earthquake.
Check and make sure the building where you live is quite earthquake resistant, or there is no damage due to earthquake vibrations that endanger the stability of the building before you return to the house.
Also, people are advised to remain calm and not be affected by issues related to earthquakes that cannot be accounted for.
